Proxy Anonymity Levels

Proxy anonymity levels classify how much an HTTP proxy reveals about itself and the client’s original network address. The common labels are transparent, anonymous, and elite, though testing tools and providers do not always define them identically.

A transparent proxy forwards the client’s original IP in headers such as Forwarded or X-Forwarded-For, and may also identify itself as a proxy. An anonymous proxy hides the original IP but leaves signals that a proxy handled the request. An elite or high-anonymity proxy aims to hide both the original address and obvious proxy-identifying headers, so the HTTP request resembles a direct client connection at that layer.

These labels cover limited HTTP observations. They do not mean that a user is anonymous in the broader sense. Accounts, cookies, browser fingerprints, TLS handshakes, request patterns, and application data can still link activity across IP changes. A destination may also classify the exit range as a known proxy or hosting network without receiving a proxy header.

Testing should inspect the complete request that reaches a controlled server rather than rely only on a provider label. Never operate an open proxy that unknown users can access. Open proxies and their risks explains why uncontrolled access is dangerous.
